We’re almost one week away from the release of Barbie, and nobody’s working harder than the film’s PR team.
It feels as though everywhere you turn there’s a new pink-centric stunt that builds hype around the film. There have been over 30 product collaborations, a replica of the Barbie Malibu DreamHouse has been listed on Airbnb, poster reveals for the film’s stacked cast that quickly became memes, and that’s just scratching the surface.
All of this combined has led to a fair amount of internet frenzy which fashion shopping platform LYST credits for a 416% increase in search results for all things pink. And (naturally) yet another TikTok-famous micro-trend that ends in “-core”.
That trend is, of course, Barbiecore — which has gotten 553 million views on the app to date.
First found floating around on FYPs last summer, it’s managed to have a longer life-cycle than most things on the video-sharing app as new Barbie-inspired moments continue to hit viral status. This is especially true now that the film is on a run of global press events and has had its star-studded premiere — there’s no escaping the pink-colored outfits.
This has included Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling (who play Barbie and Ken in the movie), taking every opportunity possible to dress up as IRL Barbie and Ken dolls.
Gosling, in particular, has gone above and beyond to embrace his character and touted stories to the press about his “Ken-ergy” and letting them know that they are “Kenough” all while sporting head-to-toe pink — of course.
And it’s not just the cast of the film who have been unable to put the pink down, but practically anyone attending any of its many events (with the notable exception of Hari Nef in CELINE).
