Just 1 cup of raspberries has major benefits for gut and heart health, dietitians say

Bright, juicy red raspberries have a ton of nutritional benefits. So it’s probably no surprise that dietitians are excited when raspberry season comes around.

“Lovely red raspberries are my favorite and my kids’ favorite,” Theresa Gentile, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, tells TODAY.com. With their vibrant red color, natural balance of sweetness and tartness along with a unique texture, it’s hard not to love raspberries.

And they’re great for you! While other berries tend to get a lot of attention for their health benefits, raspberries have plenty of nutrients to offer as well — especially for your gut and heart health.

“Blueberries sometimes take the berry spotlight, but I’m on team raspberries,” Caroline Susie, a registered dietitian based in Dallas, tells TODAY.com. Raspberries provide gut- and heart-healthy fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants, she says.

“Those are just three big reasons why folks should have some of these in their life,” says Susie, who is also a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

A one-cup serving of raw raspberries contains:

  • 64 calories
  • 1.5 grams protein
  • 0.8 grams fat
  • 14.6 grams carbohydrates
  • 8 grams fiber (32% daily value)
  • 32 milligrams vitamin C (43% daily value)

Raspberry benefits

Raspberries are a sweet way to get all kinds of healthful nutrients, vitamins and minerals in your diet. That includes hefty amounts of antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, manganese and iron.

But it’s their high fiber content that makes raspberries really stand out — even when compared to other berries.
