The Asheville Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, Beta Lambda Zeta, recently observed its annual Finer Womanhood event.
Zeta Phi Beta was one of the earliest sororities for African American women, founded on January 16, 1920, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC, and incorporated three years later. Throughout that century the sorority has maintained high standards of “Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood.”
The last principle, unique to Zeta Phi Beta, is honored each February and March, when women from the community, schools, Zeta, and Amica is honored for their outstanding work.
This year’s 2024 honorees were: Sarah Weston Hart, Zeta of the year; Barbara Lewis, for 67 years as a Zeta; Peggy Lynch, Amica of the Year; Je’Wana Grier-McEachin, Community Service Award; Tracey Greene Washington, Community Service; and Kaimaiha McDaniel, Student Achievement Award.
Asheville faith leaders Rev. Ronald B. Webb, Pastor of St. John A Baptist Church, and Sister Nicole Payne of Sycamore Temple COGIC, spoke at the ceremony.
