Mannie Fresh has a number of hits, but one stands out above all: “Back Dat Azz Up,” — and according to him, it’s because of the track’s “romantic” nature.
HipHopDX chatted with Mannie Fresh, who was joined by Pimpin’ and Parlae of Dem Franchize Boyz at the 2023 Lovers and Friends Festival. The legendary producer and the duo discussed a variety of topics with host Jeremy Hecht, including their favorite dance craze of all time, Lil Uzi Vert, and more.
Taking the discussion a step further, Mannie stated that Dem Franchize Boyz were among the last era of artists who merely danced and had fun. In his opinion, everything has now become about who is the most gangster: “Like wait, y’all ain’t dancing no more? Y’all that gangsta?” he asked.
“I love when people smile and have fun, ain’t nothing wrong with that,” he added.
Pimpin’ and Parlae even chimed in about some of their favorite artists who are revitalizing Hip Hop’s dance culture, including Lil Uzi Vert and the dance craze surrounding “Just Wanna Rock.” The conversation also turned to how the Franchize Boyz’ hit and it’s dance have lasted for generations.
From Mannie’s perspective as a producer and DJ, it’s something that today’s artists may not be able to reach.
“It ain’t a diss but you probably not gonna hear none of the new shit played at a wedding reception five years from now,” he said, as well as giving the Franchize Boyz their just due regrading their hit track’s lasting power.
Upon being asked what’s his favorite track when he gets behind the turntables, Mannie immediately named one of his biggest hits, “Back Dat Azz Up,” from Juvenile’s 400 Degreez album.
