Crystal Cauley’s Legacy of Love and Resilience

Crystal Cauley has been an advocate and friend to many in our community.

Crystal, a Black community leader and activist in Hendersonville, passed on June 16, 2024 at the age of 44. She leaves behind a 24-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter.

This beloved cultural trendsetter and social justice advocate, who lived in Hendersonville, NC, dedicated her life to uplifting the community. Her tireless efforts to promote equality and preserve African American history have left an indelible mark on our hearts.

Crystal founded the Black Business Network of Western North Carolina. She also began the Black History Collective of Henderson County in 2019 with the opening of a Black art exhibition. The collective pushed to have Black History Month recognized by the city of Hendersonville, resulting in a proclamation made by Mayor Barbara Volk in February 2023. Other proclamations include the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Kwanzaa, and Hendersonville’s first Juneteenth celebration.

Crystal was also running for a seat on the Henderson County Board of Education. In 2023 she received a “Radical Rest” grant from the Waymakers Collective, an organization that supports Appalachian art and culture.


Crystal reading her poem, Headwrap. Poetic Versers of Color is a monthly event held at the Kava Bar and featuring writers of color. Crystal, Robert Zachary, and Tony Robles organized the readings that began a few months ago.

Crystal was a beacon of light, known for her passionate spirit and unwavering dedication to social justice. She touched countless lives with her creative endeavors and community projects. Her legacy of love, resilience, and cultural pride continue to inspire us all.
