When we were recently first introduced to the New Balance 610v1, we were immediately excited. So much so, in fact, that we instantly started to theorize on whether it could take the 990 model’s crown.
The shoe takes its inspiration from 2000s trail runners (because even outdoor shoes can’t avoid the Y2K trend) and comes with all the tech you could need from a rugged lifestyle shoe. We’re talking about a C-CAP cushioning midsole for superior underfoot support, combined with ABZORB cushioning, and an N-Durance Outsole for extra comfort and grip.
So far we’ve seen Bodega release its own take, Joe Freshgoods, and even Aminé receive his own upcoming colorway after joining New Balance last year.
And while a few of the releases earlier this year saw the 610 outfitted in bright, popping colorways the all terrain shoe is back in a few tonal shades and with textured finishes that pays homage to its trail origins.
As utilitarian sneaker models continue to dominate the most hyped drops, New Balance has been joining the fun by covering our favorite models in a GORE-TEX membrane and even linking up with Aimé Leon Dore on a full-on hiking boot.
This model sees the brand dig into its history in function-first footwear by re-introducing one of its off-road silhouettes with style-focused updates. And part of the team responsible for doing that is Yue Wu, the designer responsible for the label’s highly-popular 2002r Refined Future collection (AKA the protection pack).
Whether this model can hit the same success as the protection pack, or the 990, is still up in the air, but all signs point towards the 610v1 becoming yet another success story for New Balance.
