On Tuesday, February 20, 2024, the MLK Association honored four men with the 2024 John Lewis Award at Black Wall Street AVL.
This award honors men in our community who have:
- Fostered a culture of inclusion in the Asheville community.
- Worked to achieve a just society for the disadvantaged.
- Exemplified a nonviolent philosophy in pursuit of a better life for non-majority people.
- Inspired direct action in the cause of social justice.
The 2024 John Lewis Award honorees
Mr. DeWayne Barton is the founder of Hood Huggers International, an organization dedicated to improving African American communities in Appalachia.
Rev. Spencer Hardaway is the Pastor/Chaplain at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
Hon. Calvin Hill has been the Chief District Court Judge of the Judicial District 28 since 2011.
Mr. Kenyon Lake is the founder of My Daddy Taught Me That, a program designed to support the development, uplift, and education of youth and young males.
