Summer in Europe may be over, but you can still slip into a serene, sun-soaked state of mind thanks to Loro Piana’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection.
Debuting at Milan Fashion Week, SS2024 delivers the sophisticated Italian esprit Loro Piana is known for, only this time, the luxury house has looked further afield for inspiration—to Japan.
Loro Piana has natural affinities with Japan, such as their rich culture of artisanship and shared appreciation for qualitative, well-crafted designs that last a lifetime or more. This collection leans into these mutual values both in spirit and design.
When it comes to design, the collection follows principles that simultaneously underpin Japanese design and are true to Loro Piana’s identity, such as the exploration of ma, a term used in Japanese to describe the space between the body and clothing. As a result, silhouettes are soft and elegant, tailoring emphasizes long lines, while quilted jackets and overshirts get compact and shrunken. There are nods to Kimonos throughout the collection with deep v-necks, waists cinched with wide bands of fabric, voluminous sleeves, and collarless anorak shirts.
The color palette comprises classic tones, allowing the spotlight to shine on the silhouettes and fabrics. In true Loro Piana style, the materials are luxurious but not ostentatious, including cashmere, linen, jacquard silk, and a new fabric, Denim Silk, a technical combination of 60 percent denim and 40 percent silk.
To bring the collection to life, Loro Piana is running a series of activations throughout Milan. In Via dei Giardini, a kiosk is transformed into a Japanese bakery serving wagashi kasutera with honey and matcha in boxes wrapped with the art of furoshiki, an ancient Japanese method of wrapping gifts with a square piece of cloth. In this case, Loro Piana is using surplus fabrics that can be re-used as scarves.
