Kelly Hyland of ‘Dance Moms’ says this symptom was the first sign she had breast cancer

Kelly Hyland, alum of “Dance Moms,” revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer just eight months after a mammogram that came back clear.

But Hyland’s experience started with a more mysterious warning sign, the 53-year-old told E! News.

“The first red flag was my significant weight loss,” she said. “I lost enough that others noticed and would ask for my dieting hacks, but there was nothing I had changed in my day-to-day to cause the loss.” 

Unexplained weight loss is a concerning symptom on its own. So when Hyland noticed a lump in her breast in late March, she took action quickly and scheduled another mammogram.

She’d just had a mammogram eight months ago, Hyland told E! News. But this one, followed by an ultrasound, “came back showing a mass,” Hyland explained. A biopsy confirmed that Hyland had breast cancer: a stage 1 grade 3 invasive carcinoma, indicating that the cancer is fast-growing but has not spread much, the American Cancer Society explains.

“I went from clean results to a malignant mass in eight months,” Hyland said. “I was shocked that it had grown that quickly and scared of the battle I knew I was about to face.”

Hyland shared the news with her kids, fellow “Dance Mom” alums Paige and Brooke Hyland, and her son Josh Hyland. With the support of her children, other close family members, friends and former co-stars, Hyland embarked on her treatment journey.

She’s currently in the midst of her second of six chemotherapy treatments, according to E! News, which will be followed by surgery, radiation and 11 more chemotherapy treatments.

Even with such a strong support system, Hyland expressed discomfort at relying on others through the challenges of cancer treatment.
