Haiti’s 2024 Olympic Uniforms

by The Urban News
Team Haiti’s new uniforms designed by Stella Jean.

The team will wear these uniforms at the opening ceremony on July 26, 2024 in Paris.

According to Jean, the 15 athletes “…will stand and compete for a nation that asks the world not to forget that it has changed history. Responding to their call is not only an ethical duty as the present and future of multilateralism is at stake.”

Stella Jean collaborated with Haitian artist Philippe Dodard to bring his artwork “Passage” to life in the uniforms. This collaboration presents an opportunity for Jean to showcase her native country, highlighting its artistry and cultural heritage. Dodard’s “Passage” symbolizes resilience and renewal.

For the women’s uniform, Dodard’s artwork adorns a full skirt paired with a chambray shirt woven with Haiti’s traditional blue cotton. A sleeveless blazer crafted from recycled fabric and adorned with the Haitian Olympic emblem completes the ensemble. The men’s uniform includes pants with Dodard’s motif, a field jacket inspired by the Haitian Guayabera shirt, a striped shirt, and a printed scarf.

The uniforms, representing Haiti’s rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship, will be exhibited at the Museum of the Haitian National Pantheon in Port-au-Prince following the Olympics. The 2024 Olympics take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.

Jean is a self-taught Italian-Haitian designer recognized as the first Black Italian designer. She is considered Giorgio Armani’s protégée. Her work fuses classic Italian tailoring with African and Caribbean themes, and Haitian imagery.

Jean has made it her mission to denounce the lack of diversity and racism in the world of fashion and in Italian society.
