Andrew Aydin’s Graphic Memoir Trilogy

by The Urban News
Best-selling author Andrew Aydin

March and Run chronicle the life of Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis.

Co-authored with Rep. Lewis, March was the first comic work to ever win the National Book Award.

An Atlanta native, Andrew Aydin is a Turkish-American who was raised by a single mother. He joined the staff of Rep. John Lewis in 2007, serving in several capacities including campaign communications director, digital director, and policy advisor until Lewis’s passing in 2020.

In 2019, Andrew joined with Kelly Sue Deconnick, Matt Fraction, Valentine DeLandro, and Vaughn Shinall to found Good Trouble Productions. The company produces innovative nonfiction graphic novel and multimedia projects.

Celebrate an American hero and pick up the March series to learn about John Lewis and all those who fought for equality during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and ’60s.

March is a vivid first-hand account of John Lewis’s lifelong struggle for civil and human rights, meditating in the modern age on the distance traveled since the days of Jim Crow and segregation. Rooted in Lewis’s personal story, it also reflects on the highs and lows of the broader civil rights movement. Run picks up during the civil rights leader’s life in the 1960s counterculture revolution.

This living history gives faces and voices to the legends of the civil rights era and connects their struggles to the present; the police brutality, voter suppression tactics, and segregationist politics of the 1960s are not so different from those Lewis was still making “good trouble” against at the time of his death in 2020.

Lewis’s stunning American story and legacy lives on! The books are illustrated by Nate Powell. For more information, visit www.andrewaydin.com, and shop for the books at www.etsy.com/shop/TruthComics.
