Bowen Yang suffering from ‘bad bouts of depersonalization,’ stepping away from podcast

by UNN Feed

Bowen Yang is prioritizing his mental health.

The “Saturday Night Live” star announced he’s taking a temporary hiatus from his podcast, “Las Culturistas,” to treat his “bad bouts of depersonalization.”

“Taking a very short break from [‘Las Culturistas’]. Bad bouts of depersonalization are f–king me up bad, but I am doing my best to get better!” Yang wrote on his Instagram Story over the weekend.

“Please take care, be soon.”

Depersonalization is a psychological condition in which people have out-of-body experiences that cause them to believe that things around them aren’t real, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The disorder is more common for people who’ve had traumatic experiences.

Yang has co-hosted the podcast with Matt Rogers since 2016, and the two regularly interview A-List celebrities.

The “Fire Island” star, 32, revealed in People magazine’s 2021 Sexiest Man Alive issue that his trauma stems from when his parents sent him to a gay conversion camp.

“There was a huge chasm of misunderstanding,” Yang explained. “Neither side really understood where the other was coming from, and it led to very dangerous situations overall.

“What was always constant was the intention of love from both sides,” he added. “It pushed me into questioning what it meant, what was protected and what I should be protective about in terms of being a queer person. I don’t take it for granted.”

Yang also admitted that while he doesn’t feel pressure as the first Asian-American and openly gay comic on “SNL,” he does have a “constant” sense of humility.

“And If I ever put pressure on myself to represent in any meaningful way for Asian people, then that would just get in my way in terms of thinking that I am destined to speak on behalf of multiple people,” he added.
