Bridgerton series creator Shonda Rhimes brings us an amazing six-part series that explores the journeys many Black women make to discover their strength. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, a prequel to Bridgerton, looks back at the making of Queen Charlotte.
Young Queen Charlotte’s marriage to King George of England is an epic love story that transformed British high society. The series also touches on racial issues, mental health, and women’s ability to make decisions about their own bodies.
Bridgerton stars Golda Rosheuvel (as mature Queen Charlotte), Adjoa Andoh (as mature Lady Danbury), Arsema Thomas (as young Agatha Danbury), and Ruth Gemmell (Lady Violet Bridgerton), all reprising their roles as Regency-era grande dames of the Ton.
The prequel stars India Amarteifio as a younger version of the queen, who is just 17 when she’s paired with a young King George III (Corey Mylchreest). The union is vital to Britain’s survival, although many in the court are displeased with the mixed-race marriage.
The young Agatha Danbury, who becomes an early confidant of Charlotte’s, has her own story to tell of breaking down color barriers. The show reveals how Bridgerton’s aristocracy became what we see today, a diverse mix of races led by a Black queen.
It’s stories like this that tackle issues in our own society that need to be shared. The new series gives us all the charm, frivolity, and steamy romantic scenes that we’ve come to love.
