NPR’s Code Switch Podcast

by The Urban News

Fearless conversations about race, politics, and culture.

Hosted by journalists of color, the Code Switch podcast tackles the subject of race with empathy and humor. Each show explores how race affects every part of society—from politics and pop culture, to history, food, and everything in between.

In linguistics, “code-switching” means mixing languages or patterns of speech in conversation. But as Gene Demby, the co-host of the podcast, explains: “We’re looking at code-switching a little more broadly. Many of us subtly, reflexively change the way we express ourselves all the time. We’re hop-scotching between different cultural and linguistic spaces and different parts of our own identities—sometimes within a single interaction.

The Code Switch team is comprised of multi-racial, multi-generational journalists who cover race and identity. Demby began his career at The New York Times before helping launch HuffPost’s Black Voices vertical. He was also the founder of the award-winning politics and culture blog PostBourgie.

Karen Grigsby Bates is a senior correspondent for the show. She is especially interested in stories about the hidden history of race in America—and in the intersection of race and culture.

Code Switch is full of stories about the complex ways that race, identity and culture play out in peoples’ lives. Launched in 2016, the podcast has covered a variety of topics, including whiteness, being outdoorsy, Black police officers, redlining, guns, food, education, racism, and language.

You can listen to Code Switch on NPR One, Spotify, Apple, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts. For more information, visit www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch.
