The Asheville Symphony Chorus will perform French composer Maurice Duruflé’s “Requiem” in concert on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church Street in downtown Asheville.

The choir performance, under the direction of Kyle Ritter, will be accompanied by organist Tate Addis, who will also present the Organ Symphony #10, Op. 73 “Romain,” by Charles Widor. The concert is titled “Inspirations grégoriennes: French Masterworks for Choir and Organ.”

The “Requiem,” written for full choir and accompaniment by organ or a full orchestra, was completed in 1947 and revised by the composer in 1961. Derived from a Gregorian chant of a Mass for the Dead, its nine sections are the Introit, Kyrie, Domine Jesu Christe, Sanctus, Pie Jesu, Agnus Dei, Lux aeterna, Libera me, and In Paradisum.

Ritter is Canon for Music at the Cathedral of All Souls in Asheville and was appointed permanent music director of the ASC in January. He is an adjunct instructor in music at Brevard College and Chair of the Liturgy and Music Commission of the Episcopal Diocese of western North Carolina. A gifted organist himself, Ritter earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Indiana University, where he was a pupil of Robert Rayfield and Marilyn Keiser, and was previously an adjunct instructor in Liturgics at Virginia Theological Seminary.
