They say shoot for the moon but aim for the stars, and for college basketball player Hansel Enmanuel, that describes his entire life story. The 21-year-old has been playing basketball since early childhood, following after his father’s footsteps. But now, he’s paving his own way on his own terms.

The journey for Enmanuel hasn’t been an easy one. At just age six, he lost his left arm in a tragic accident. Enmanuel found himself trapped under a concrete wall for hours after it collapsed on him while he was playing, according to ESPN. After being rushed to the emergency room, there was simply too much damage, forcing doctors to amputate his arm just below the shoulder. “I really appreciate God to give me that life lesson in that moment because my whole mind, my whole body, everything changed since the moment that it happened, Enmanuel told WSMV.

In total, he spent six months recovering in the hospital, according to Sporting News. Soon after his release was when he picked up the sport that would change his life forever. “I don’t go back. I go day by day and take care of what I’ve got to take care of,” Enmanuel said.

Born and raised by his grandmother in the Dominican Republic, Enmanuel came to the states to further pursue his basketball dreams at a Christian prep school in Florida, according to PEOPLE. The 6 foot 6 guard began making waves after going viral on social media for his impressive dunks and dribbling skills in 2021. From there, the ball just kept on rolling!

Fresh out of high school, Enmanuel committed to Northwestern State University, and after a year, he transferred to Austin Peay for more playing time, according to Sporting News. “I think he understands that the torch he carries is a very heavy one, and it burns hot,” said Austin Peay senior guard Isaac Haney, who’s known Enmanuel since their shared time at Northwestern. “He pushes through every single day because he knows people are looking at him. I’m always amazed at how he…

It’s never too late to chase your dreams, but when a Bronx, NY grandmother decided to pursue her own and go get her masters degree, life took an unthinkable turn. After a two-year-long set back, she’s back on track to open her own business providing much needed help to New York’s homeless population.

Life for Karen Wallace hasn’t always been an easy one. Two years ago, she started John Jay College in hopes of obtaining her masters in public administration, but then she was hit with a tragic diagnosis. She shared her story with ABC 7 of how shortly after deciding to go back to school, she was diagnosed with cancer.

“I had already got diagnosed with the breast cancer in November,” the social worker told ABC 7’s Nina Pineda. Despite her condition, Wallace finished the first two weeks of classes. “I just went on and started, because it started. I’m home, I’m online, it was easy,” she continued.

But in January, her education was put on pause after she was hit with yet another cancer diagnosis. “When we did the PET scan in January, and it came up with the Non-Hodgkin lymphoma,” she revealed. “I just didn’t know what to do.”

The grad student soon decided to withdraw from school, notably doing so within the school’s designated withdrawal time frame. Over the next year, Wallace took her health seriously, and her cancer was in remission when yet another bomb dropped— this time in the form of a bill.

The school had charged Wallace for more than $5,000 despite her never being able to finish a class. And after going back and worth with the college over the matter, her bill went into collection. “It was going to go on my credit report, what am I going to do?” she asked. “It made me want to cry, I was literally sick.”

But, that’s when ABC 7 jumped in and pulled some impressive strings. “7 On Your Side contacted John Jay College on a Friday, and before classes started on Monday, Wallace got some great news,” journalist Pineda said.

In 2024, the first-time homebuyer market share dropped to a historic low of 24 percent, according to the National Association of Realtors. But despite Americans nationally having a tough time buying homes, through the New York Housing Lottery System (NYHL), over 60 New York families became first-time home buyers this year.

Of them is the couple of Tanese Orr, a 45-year-old Jamaican-American, and her husband, Robert Lashley. Orr shared with PIX11 her American dream had always been to buy a house, but after living in public housing for 20 years, it felt impossible.

To help with Orr’s dream, she applied to the Small Homes Rehab-NYCHA Program — a government program which restores foreclosed homes across the city and sells them. “I applied for the homeownership aspect because I was already renting and didn’t want to leave an apartment for another apartment,” Orr said in an interview with CNBC Make It.

Three years after signing up for the program, Orr logged in and saw an active lottery for homes. That’s when she applied. Less than two months later, she received an email to submit a list of required documents, and then Orr eventually toured two houses in Brooklyn.

“While I was going through the process, they kept asking for more documents but I didn’t care. I was going to find a way to get everything to them because I knew it would be my home,” Orr said.

According to Zillow, homes in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Clinton Hill, where Orr toured, sell for around $971,000. This figure is up 2.2 percent since 2023.

But the married couple lucked up when they were able to secure a two-family home, worth $1.1 million, for just $727, 365, according to CNBC. Despite the blessing, Orr wants everyone to know this wasn’t as easy as it seemed. “People think that we just won the lottery and we got it for free but that’s not true.” Orr continued saying, “We still had to have a good amount saved.”

If you sat down and created a long list of names of some of the most prominent Black people in entertainment, politics and so on, you’ll start to notice that many of them were born or raised in the state of South Carolina. We noticed it when we started searching for nominees for The Root 100 list in 2024. Since then, we have tried to crack the mystery of why are there so many Black superstars from this one troubled state.

People who aren’t from South Carolina may associate the state with racial trauma above Black Excellence: From way back to current day, the state has suffered more than its share of racially-charged killings: 2015 alone included the anti-Black massacre at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, and that same year unarmed Walter Scott was fatally shot in the back by a white police officer who claimed Scott had tried to harm him. Between that and dismal statistics around education and incarceration, the state often has the odds going against it.

But people who hail from the state see it as much more. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the United States in 1860, leading to the start of the Civil War, but Black South Carolinians have helped to lead Black America to freedom. In the case of Walter Scott, a video showed what happened, protest emerged and the white officer who shot Scott was sent to prison.

In other words, South Carolinians may have uphill battles, businessman Walter Davis told The Root, but they’re willing to take a stand up for what’s right and to fight for what they deserve.

“I believe a number of people have been driven to prove the skeptics wrong. For so many years South Carolina was considered one of the worst states when it came to education, incarceration rates and other key measures that are indicators of future success,’’ Davis said. “ Expectations were traditionally low. self-determination and the desire to overcome the odds are important factors for many Black South…

Heman Bekele, a 15-year-old boy hailing from Ethiopia, has been honored by Time Magazine for creating a soap that could possibly treat and cure skin cancer. The outlet reported how Bekele noticed how the sun effected people’s skin and how they often worked in the sun without properly protecting themselves.

His family later immigrated to the United States when he was seven and gifted him a chemistry set for Christmas. The set included sodium hydroxide, which sparked Bekele’s interest in science. His observation of how the sun affected folks around him only grew.

“When I was younger, I didn’t think much of it, but when I came to America, I realized what a big problem the sun and ultraviolet radiation is when you’re exposed to it for a long time,” Bekele explained to Time.

“I’m really passionate about skin cancer research,” he continued. “Whether it’s my own research or what’s happening in the field.” Bekele ultimately learned about imiquimod and how it was already approved to treat certain forms of skin cancer.

Bekele eventually remembered his years in his native country and wondered if imiquimod was available to people regardless of their socio-economic status. “Almost everyone uses soap and water for cleaning. So soap would probably be the best option,” Bekele stated about why he decided to make soap.

Last year, the teenager won Discovery Education’s Young Scientist Challenge and received $25,000 for the potential of his idea. Bekele currently attends Woodson High School in Fairfax County, Va. When he’s not in class, he conducts his research at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore.

The Time article also revealed that the teen has around a decade to go before the soap could be approved as a cancer treatment.
