]]>On Saturday, April 28, 2025, as clergy – including Bishop William J. Barber, II – and people of moral conscience respectfully prayed in the rotunda of the United States Capitol, they were arrested.
Capitol Police not only removed those who were praying aloud but cleared the room entirely. Reporters were threatened with arrest for remaining in the Rotunda. The public and cameras, including those belonging to press outlets, were banned from the area.
The arrests occurred roughly 15 minutes after Barber, the Rev. Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, and Steve Swayne, director of St. Francis Springs Prayer Center, began praying in the Rotunda as dozens of police stood nearby, some prepared with plastic handcuffs. The three took turns praying, lamenting potential budget cuts to social safety-net programs such as Medicaid, often chanting together: “Against the conspiracy of cruelty, we plead the power of your mercy.”
Clergy and People of Moral Conscience Arrested for Praying Inside the United States Capitol
According to Capitol Police, demonstrating is not allowed in any form inside Congressional buildings. The three members of the clergy were charged with “crowding, obstructing, or incommoding,” a Capitol Police spokesperson said in an email.
The arrests followed a rally nearby outside the US Supreme Court building, where Barber rallied with other clergy and faith leaders, as well as federal workers who lost their jobs, to condemn the GOP-led budget.
Incommoding: to inconvenience or discomfort; disturb; trouble. Apparently, praying too hard for poor people now legally constitutes a disturbance.

]]>For millions of Americans, Sundays are a day of faith, spirituality, and moral reflection.
In that spirit, on April 27, 2025, just before dawn, Senator Cory Booker and Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries sat down on the steps of the US Capitol and began an urgent, live-streamed conversation with the American people to focus on our common values, our faith traditions, and the moral moment our nation is in.
The sit-in protest and discussion on the steps of the US Capitol was streamed live on social media.
With Congress returning to session this week, Republican leaders have made clear their intention to use the coming weeks to advance a budget bill to President Trump’s desk that seeks to gut Medicaid, food stamps, and other safety net programs that help people afford the basics – all to help pay for tax cuts for the nation’s most wealthy. Given what’s at stake, these could be some of the most consequential weeks for seniors, kids, and families in generations.
Booker and Jeffries believe extraordinary action is necessary to counter this extraordinary threat. Do not underestimate your power to make a difference!

]]>At a rally on Sunday, April 27, 2025 during his ‘Standing Up For Illinois’ tour, Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) slammed the Trump Administration for how its policies affect working class Americans.
In a scorching address, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker delivered an impassioned call to arms for Democrats in New Hampshire, condemning his own party’s “culture of timidity” while urging wholesale resistance to the Trump administration.
Gov. Pritzker: Trump administration is ‘Pulling The Rug Out From Under’ those chasing the American Dream.
“Fellow Democrats, for far too long we’ve been guilty of listening to a bunch of do-nothing political types who would tell you that America’s house is not on fire, even as the flames are licking their faces.”
“It’s time to fight, everywhere and all at once. Now, let’s start with something that should be easy to say. It’s wrong to snatch a person off the street and ship them to a foreign gulag with no chance to defend themselves in a court of law.”
“Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption. But I am now.”
“These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace. They have to understand that we will fight their cruelty with every megaphone and microphone that we have. We must castigate them on the soapbox and then punish them at the ballot box.”
The speech, delivered to more than 800 Democrats at the McIntyre-Shaheen 100 Club state party dinner — reportedly the largest crowd New Hampshire Democrats have seen since 2020 — saw Pritzker standing on the same stage where countless presidential hopefuls have tested their messages in the nation’s first primary state.

]]>The Wortham Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Asheville will present Gaspard&Dancers in concert May 2 and 3, 2025, at 8 p.m.
The company’s founder and artistic director, Haitian-born former Pilobolus dancer Gaspard Louis, has earned international acclaim for his diverse and inclusive company, built upon a shared passion for versatile, inventive and inspiring movement. Louis draws inspiration from, among many other sources, the idea of believing in magic, the search for self-acceptance, and the spiritual practices of his home country.
How far can your imagination take you? Marrying playful physicality with lyrical, athletic partnering, the renowned Gaspard&Dancers consistently produces works of haunting beauty and emotional force, with fluidity of motion that critics have praised as “exuberant,” “organic,” “buoyant” and “floating with natural ease.”
Louis received a BFA in dance from Montclair State University and continued his dance studies on scholarship at Gus Giordano’s in Chicago and Nikolais/Louis Dance Lab in New York. He then joined the New York-based company AllNations, where he performed traditional dances from many parts of the world for US troops across the globe. Subsequently, he performed and traveled worldwide with Pilobolus Dance Theater, collaborating on the choreography of nine major dance works with the company and teaching master dance classes both nationally and internationally.
“The depth and breadth of Gaspard Louis’ choreography, the number of accomplished dancers and collaborations with artists in other fields reaches a new level.” ~ The Herald-Sun

]]>The Asheville Symphony’s biennial festival blends music, art, foodways and more in a celebration of narrative through community.
This celebration of music and the arts runs April 30 – May 10, 2025, with the theme “The Art of Storytelling,” exploring the power of music, theatre, art, and foodways to inspire, connect, and captivate.
Co-headlining the festival are Grammy Award-winning mandolinist, composer, and MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient Chris Thile, and the Grammy- and Emmy-winning ensemble Time For Three (TF3), renowned for their genre-blending virtuosity.
Chris Thile is a mandolinist, singer, songwriter, composer, and recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellow “Genius Grant,” described by The Guardian as “that rare being: an all-round musician,” and hailed by NPR as a “genre-defying musical genius.” Thile is a founding member of the highly influential string bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, and has collaborated with countless luminaries from Yo-Yo Ma to Fiona Apple to Brad Mehldau. For four years, he hosted “Live from Here with Chris Thile” (successor to A Prairie Home Companion).
With his broad outlook, Thile creates a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike, giving the listener, according to The New York Times, “one joyous arc, with the linear melody and vertical harmony blurring into a single web of gossamer beauty.”
Time for Three (TF3)—comprising violinists Charles Yang and Nick Kendall and bassist Ranaan Meyer—defy conventions with their genre-bending excellence. Their captivating sound merges eras, styles, and traditions across Western music genres, including classical music, Americana, and singer-songwriter styles.
The ensemble has worked closely with such artists as Chris Brubeck and Pulitzer Prize winners William Bolcom and Jennifer…
