Tyler Perry Sets First-Look Film Deal With Netflix

The ever-busy Tyler Perry has signed a multi-year, first-look feature pact with Netflix, with the multi-hyphenate planning to write, direct and produce films for the streamer.

Perry is already working with Netflix on several titles, including Six Triple Eight, a World War II period film about the only all-Black, all-female battalion stationed overseas in the war effort. Kerry Washington will lead an ensemble cast that also includes Oprah Winfrey. He has also set the legal drama Mea Culpa, which stars Kelly Rowland as a criminal defense attorney who takes on the case of an artist who may or may not have murdered his girlfriend.

Perry previously worked with Netflix on his period drama A Jazzman’s Blues, thriller A Fall from Grace, and A Madea Homecoming — the 12th installment in his Madea film franchise.

Notably, Perry already has a pact with competing streamer, Amazon, which announced a deal in 2022 where he would write, direct, and produce four features that will be released on Prime Video. This pact is non-exclusive so Perry will see through the films at Amazon, which include police brutality drama Black, White, and Blue, and Meagan Good marriage drama Divorce in the Black. The tech giant will soon release the doc Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story, which is billed as a bio-doc on the Hollywood mogul.

On the television front, the ever-prolific Perry, who has had a long-time partnership with Paramount, where he is behind long-running BET series like The Oval, Assisted Living and Sistas. This year, Perry was engaged in conversation about acquiring a majority stake in BET when Paramount Global put the label up for sale. By August, it was reported that the company was no longer seeking a buyer for a majority stake in BET.

Recently, Perry said he was “disappointed about it for a number of reasons” in the bidding process for BET. “God bless them,” he said of Paramount during the Bloomberg Equality Summit…
