The humble cardigan has had a veritable glow-up in recent years. From being a staple for senior citizens to getting experimented with on the runway, you can now find the knitwear style everywhere — the cardigan’s rightful place as a must-have wardrobe element for any modern rotation has officially been cemented.
And while there’s no shortage of outfits to back that up, from the street style OG Pharrell to The Mandalorian Pedro Pascal, there are a couple of cardi advocates that have stood out recently.
The first of those comes courtesy of A24 and Netflix’s latest hit series, Beef.
George Nakai, a wholesome husband and artist who gets in a feud that’s central to the series’ plot, treads the fine line between a Nolita Dirtbag and a conservatively-dressed dad through carefully-picked knitted cardigans.
Whether it be super-fuzzy, multi-colored knits or ones with a tie-up front, he always pairs them with a T-shirt and baggy pants. It’s a simple combination to style, but it truly works wonders — just as Tyler, The Creator has proven countless times.
Nobody has backed the corner of cardigans quite like the musician. While being at the forefront of fashion’s continued preppy resurgence, through both his own line Golf Wang and highly-coveted everyday style, the California native has found ways to wear one in every season.
You can catch him layer a cardigan under a puffer jacket in the winter or pair one together with shorts and a matching ushunka hat in the warmer months — as seen on the cover of his recently-released deluxe album.
But for all of his year-round experimentation, having a solid knitwear selection is more than advised for the transitional seasons. Freed from the constraints of heavy layers, the upcoming warm weather means we can finally wear our knitwear loud and proud as a standalone outer layer.
