The purpose of the BIPOC art show was to support and give recognition to Black artists, Indigenous artists, and artists of color, while paying them for their craft.
The artists who participated last year were students from four schools within the UNCA system: the University at Asheville, North Carolina A&T State University, University at Pembroke, and the University of Greensboro. This year was the second annual BIPOC art show and it was essential to continue the founding mission of this initiative. Support begins with understanding; it is our call as students to create a platform that showcases the work of artists of color.
The theme for this year’s BIPOC Art Show was “My Motive” featuring an artist from UNCA and two youth artists from our local community. Artists were asked to provide pieces reflecting what drives them to their goals—what gives them the motivation to be creative, grow, and create change.
The exhibit was on display from April 7 to April 14, 2023. Kha’ Lani Taylor-Cribb (youth artist) and Leonel Elmore (UNCA artist) were present on Friday, April 7 to give remarks on what motivates them to keep striving, and to witness guests’ appreciation of their work.
