Dr. Rashad Richey Presents Roland Martin With National Black Radio Hall of Fame Honor

On a glamorous evening filled with music and recognition, Dr. Rashad Richey, the youngest inductee into the National Black Radio Hall of Fame – 2022, presented the prestigious “Talk Radio Personality Award” to renowned media figure Roland Martin, inducting him into the exclusive National Black Radio Hall of Fame. Dr. Richey, who was honored with the Chairman’s award this year, said it was Roland Martin who gave him his first opportunity on national television years ago during his time as the news anchor for TV One.
The annual event, which took place on Saturday, September 21, 2024, was hosted by the National Black Radio Hall of Fame (NBRHOF) to honor trailblazers of Black radio history.

The NBRHOF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the education and celebration of the richness, history, and contributions of Black on-air broadcasters in America. These iconic figures in Black media have shaped the landscape of broadcasting by addressing the historical underrepresentation the permeates in the culture.
By spotlighting these achievements, the NBRHOF aims to ensure that both voices and narratives of Black broadcasters remain prominent in the annals of American history.
The excitement surrounding the Class of 2024 Inductees was palpable, reflecting the enduring impact these individuals have had on the culture and community. Dave Smith, the Director of the NBRHOF Induction Program, articulated the organization’s mission stating, “We honor the pioneers, trailblazers, and visionaries who have shaped the landscape of American Radio and inspired generations.” The Class of 2024 includes a diverse group of legendary DJs, radio personalities, and groundbreaking programs, each contributing to the vibrant narrative of Black radio.

Marsha Washington George, the National Vice President of the NBRHOF, added weight to the evening’s importance by emphasizing the necessity of preserving Black radio’s legacy. “It’s crucial to preserve the rich history and cultural impact of Black Radio,” she remarked, highlighting its role as a platform for social change, community empowerment, and the celebration of Black broadcasters.
Other notable recipients included:
● The Talented Sisters of Radio Award**: Jewel Carter, Porsha Fox, and Michele Williams.
● The Talented Brothers of Radio Award**: Tony Brown, Jo Jo Davis, and James T.
● The Gospel Radio Personality Radio Award**: Donnie McClurkin, Karl Eli Smith, and Steve Murry.
● The African American Station Owner Award**: Steve Hegwood and Art Gilliam.
● The African American Radio Station Promotions Award**: India Graves and A.J. Savage.
● The Talk Radio Personality Award**: Roland Martin.
● The Hip Hop Radio Personality Award**: Funkmaster Flex.
● The Lifetime Media Achievement Award Inductee**: Lee Michaels.
The ceremony also honored several pioneers posthumously, ensuring that their contributions do not go unforgotten. Inductees such as Elizabeth “Libby” Anthony, Wayne Brown, and Richard Pegue were celebrated for their impact on the radio industry, along with many others who left behind a remarkable legacy.
In addition to the awards, the National Black Radio Hall of Fame reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing the future of Black radio, encouraging new generations to understand and appreciate the immense cultural contribution this medium has made to society.
