Andrew Shannon has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the YMI Cultural Center.
Shannon brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a strong background in community engagement and coalition building.
As the YMI completes the renovation of the historic building this summer, they are planning to host a re-opening celebration where you will have an opportunity to meet Shannon, although you may see him sooner as he is looking forward to immersing himself in the community.
In the meantime, here are a few details on Shannon’s extensive experience.
Possessing a degree in Business Administration with concentration in Information Systems from Winston-Salem State University, Shannon brings over twenty-five years of supervisory and management experience, effectively collaborating with federal, state, and local governments, as well as various community organizations and leaders.
Shannon’s extensive background includes serving on the United States Commission of Civil Rights Virginia Advisory Committee and holding leadership positions in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), where he advocated for individuals and families in areas such as education, affordable housing, and equal employment opportunities.
His responsibilities at the Fluvanna County Office on Youth in Virginia involved directing youth services, overseeing program development, budgeting, grant proposals, and community education initiatives, including self-sufficiency training and volunteer coordination.
Shannon’s experience encompasses program development and management, including roles as the State Director of Community Grassroots Organizing and Education, and various leadership positions in youth services and community relations.
