New ‘Scary Movie’ in the Works from Paramount

by UNN Feed

Scary Movie is coming back to skewer the horror genre.

Paramount and Miramax are making a new take on the franchise and expect to go before cameras in the fall, Paramount revealed at CinemaCon Thursday. Fast and Furious producer Neal H. Moritz will produce the new Scary Movie.

Scary Movie launched in 2000, just a few years after Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer arrived on the scene to dominate the horror landscape. Director Keenen Ivory Wayans’ feature grossed $278 million globally and starred Anna Faris, Regina Hall and sparked four sequels, with director Malcom D. Lee’s Scary Movie 5 debuting in 2013.

Miramax will finance the new Scary Movie and Paramount will distribute. The news comes after Miramax named Jonathan Glickman CEO.

Scary Movie has always been a sendup to horror, and since it last bowed in 2013, the genre has evolved and risen to new heights, becoming one of the few dependable box office draws, with powerhouses like Blumhouse dominating the landscape. It also comes just a few years after 2022’s Scream gave that franchise new life (while also mocking modern day genre tropes and horror fan obsessions). In other words, there’s plenty of new material for Scary Movie to take a stab at.

There’s no word on if this new take will feature original stars, all new cast, or a mix (a legacy sequel, if you will). Paramount did not offer a release date, but it is expected for 2025.
