Asheville’s “Overlook” Podcast

by The Urban News

Professional journalist Matt Peiken spent 5-1/2 years with the NPR affiliate in Asheville, leaving in February 2023 to launch Podcast Asheville and The Overlook.

On February 14, 2024, artist, activist, and social entrepreneur DeWayne Barton spoke with Peiken about uplifting the Burton Street community. Barton also discusses his latest initiative, a business incubator called Blue Note Junction.

An earlier episode aired on January 17, 2024, featuring Shuvonda Harper and Sekou Coleman of the Southside United Neighborhood Association. They detailed the damage done by “urban removal” and their efforts to influence the city’s master plan and reclaim the Southside.

Peiken has also interviewed Vicki Meath and Jen Hampton of Just Economics, Jared Wheatley, the creator of the Indigenous Walls Project, and NC State Rep. Caleb Rudow.
