Different Strokes! Performing Arts Collective opens their 14th season with The Glorious World of Crowns, Kinks, and Curls, a captivating theatrical production written by acclaimed playwright Kelly Goff and directed by Different Strokes Managing Artistic Director, Stephanie Hickling Beckman. This groundbreaking show will run Thursdays through Saturdays, February 1-18, with two Sunday performances on February 11 and 18, 2024, at the Tina McGuire Theatre.
Starring the talented Naimah Coleman, Kirby Gibson, and ZaKiya Bell Rogers, The Glorious World of Crowns, Kinks, and Curls celebrates the beauty and diversity of Black women’s hair and the powerful stories that accompany it. The production promises to captivate audiences with its compelling narrative, exceptional performances, and stunning visual storytelling.
“It feels amazing to be able to put stories on stage that represent and speak to the women in my life, that I haven’t had the opportunity to tell their stories in other ways,” says playwright Keli Goff. “I know I’m not the only Black woman who has this experience where I felt hair defined a major moment in my life in a way that I wish it hadn’t.”
Goff is an internationally recognized multi-platform journalist, playwright, and screenwriter, best known for chronicling the intersections of politics, pop culture, race, and gender in America. In 2019, she was nominated for two Emmy Awards for her work as a producer on the Netflix film Reversing Roe, a documentary chronicling the history of America’s political and legal battles over abortion.
