We Will Speak Screening

by The Urban News

Four of the film’s makers will discuss and answer questions after the film.

While there are 430,000 Cherokee citizens in the three federally recognized tribes, fewer than an estimated 2,000 fluent speakers remain—the majority of whom are elderly. Language activists, artists, and the youth must now lead the charge to help save the language from extinction.

Join the Ramsey Center for Appalachian Studies, the Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the Indigenous Student Association for a screening of We Will Speak, followed by a live Q and A and discussion with four of the filmmakers on Monday, January 22, 2024.

This feature-length documentary was shot on-location in Oklahoma and North Carolina throughout 2019-2022 and explores Cherokee language revitalization efforts.
